The Violence of Divorce

Connecticut criminal defense lawyers, especially criminal defense lawyers in Stamford, Norwalk, Darien, New Canaan and Greenwich, know that the anguish, anger, pain and resentment that are spawned by divorce often lead to violence.

The World Health Organization's Violence Prevention Alliance defines violence as

"the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation".

The breadth and detail of this definition resonates within our practice at The Maddox Law Firm, because it recognizes that power, threats, emotional leverage, deprivation and psychological harm too often explode into a 911 call and arrest.

Many divorces in Fairfield County involve substantial marital estates; in other words, there's money involved and sometimes a lot of it.

And when money becomes a bone of contention, greed clouds judgment and can launch people into extraordinary intensity and irrationality.

Then, there are the children. We too often see children and the withholding of access to children, combined with the misuse of financial power as the catalysts to terrible conflict and police involvement. When police become involved in Connecticut domestic violence investigations, there's almost always going to be an arrest.

Even more disturbing, we sometimes see spouses or partners fabricating criminal allegations in order to gain what they think will be the upper hand in divorce. Out-of-control emotions and sometimes subtle and not so subtle strategies to marginalize a partner or a spouse very often lead to that emergency phone call and one or both parties being put in handcuffs.

Connecticut Domestic Violence arrests that are launched from marital conflict range from Disorderly Conduct and Breach of Peace through Strangulation, Misdemeanor Assault, Felony Assault and very often, Risk of Injury to a Minor, a Class C Felony.

At The Maddox Law Firm, we know that the violence of divorce isn't as simple as physical injury. It is much more complicated than that. We represent the accused and accusers, which affords us a 360° view of the entire conflict landscape. That view in turn gives our clients, balanced, intelligent and thoroughly informed representation.
